What Is Structured Data and Why Does It Matter for SEO?

If you’ve spent any time thinking about SEO, you’ve probably focused on the obvious stuff: keywords, content, page speed, backlinks. Those things all matter. But there’s a technical layer underneath your website that most business owners never think about, and it has an outsized impact on how search engines and AI systems understand and present your business.

That layer is structured data.

The Problem Structured Data Solves

When a human visits your website, they can glance at a page and immediately understand what it’s about. They can read your business name in the header, spot your address in the footer, scan your service list, and see your phone number. It takes about two seconds.

Search engines and AI systems can’t do that. They see code. HTML tags, paragraphs of text, links, images. They’re remarkably good at parsing that code and inferring meaning from it, but inference isn’t the same as understanding. When Google looks at your page, it’s making educated guesses about what the various pieces of text represent.

Structured data removes the guessing. It’s a standardized way of labeling the information on your page so that machines know exactly what each piece of data means. Instead of Google inferring that “412-555-0123” is probably a phone number, your structured data explicitly says: this is the telephone number for this local business, which is located at this address, offers these services, and is open during these hours.

What It Looks Like

Structured data is typically implemented as JSON-LD, which stands for JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data. Don’t worry about the name. In practice, it’s a block of code that sits in the head of your web page and describes the content in a machine-readable format.

That clarity is valuable.

Structured data influences your search presence in several concrete ways.

Rich Results

You’ve probably seen search results on Google that include extra information: star ratings, price ranges, FAQ accordions, event dates, recipe cooking times. Those are called rich results, and they’re powered by structured data.

A search result with stars, a price range, and a snippet of your FAQ takes up more space on the page and is significantly more likely to get clicked than a plain blue link. Studies have shown that rich results can increase click-through rates by 20-30% compared to standard listings.

Not every page with structured data gets rich results. Google decides whether to show them based on relevance and quality. But without structured data, you’re not even in the running.

Knowledge Panels

When you search for a well-known business and see a panel on the right side of Google’s results with photos, hours, reviews, and contact information, that’s a knowledge panel. Google builds these from multiple data sources, and structured data on your website is one of the most important ones.

“What time does Joe’s Plumbing open?” If Joe’s website has structured data with opening hours, the AI can give a confident answer. If it doesn’t, the AI has to try to parse the information from the page content and might get it wrong, or might not answer at all.

The same logic applies to AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity that are increasingly being used to find and recommend local businesses. Structured data makes it easier for these systems to include your business in their responses. This is the foundation of AI Engine Optimization (AEO).

Types of Structured Data That Matter for Businesses

The Schema.org vocabulary (which is the standard used by all major search engines) includes hundreds of types, but for most businesses, a handful are relevant:

LocalBusiness (or a more specific subtype like Plumber, Restaurant, or LegalService): Basic business information including name, address, phone, hours, and service area. This is especially important for Google Business Profile optimization.

Service: Descriptions of individual services you offer, including pricing if applicable.

FAQPage: Frequently asked questions and answers. This is one of the easiest types to implement and one of the most likely to generate rich results.

Article or BlogPosting: For blog posts and articles, including author, date published, and description.

Review and AggregateRating: Ratings and reviews of your business. Note that Google has strict guidelines about self-served review markup, so this is best used for reviews collected through verified platforms.

BreadcrumbList: Navigation breadcrumbs that help search engines understand your site’s hierarchy.

How to Implement It

If you’re technical or your web developer is, adding structured data is straightforward. You write the JSON-LD blocks and place them in the appropriate pages. Google provides a Structured Data Markup Helper and a Rich Results Test tool that let you validate your markup before and after deployment.

If you’re using a platform like WordPress, there are plugins that can generate structured data for you based on the information you enter. Yoast SEO, Rank Math, and Schema Pro are popular options.

If you’re not technical, this is something your web developer or SEO provider should be handling. If they’re not already adding structured data to your site, it’s worth asking why.

Common Mistakes

Not including it at all. The most common mistake is simply not having structured data on your site. It’s estimated that fewer than a third of websites use structured data, which means adding it gives you an immediate edge.

Using incorrect or outdated information. If your structured data says you’re open until 6pm but you actually close at 5pm, that’s worse than not having structured data at all. Keep it synchronized with your actual business information.

Marking up content that isn’t on the page. Google requires that your structured data accurately represents content that’s visible on the page. You can’t add FAQ structured data for questions that don’t actually appear on the page. That’s considered spammy and can result in a manual penalty.

Overdoing it. Adding structured data for every conceivable type on every page isn’t necessary. Focus on the types that are relevant to your business and your pages. Quality over quantity.
